About the Sherbies

When artist Shirley Hannan was young and unmarried, she was Shirley Herbert. At school she had the nick name Sherbie or Sherbs.

Could there be a more appropriate name for the young artist awards attached to the bi-ennial Shirley Hannan Portrait Award?

The name ‘Sherbie’ connotes fizz and fun, a tingle on your tongue, a sensational attack on the senses. A bit like art.

This year, four prizes are offered to young aspiring artists of the Bega Valley, specifically, making portraits. The opportunities are endless, you could paint your pet, your sister, your mum or dad, your teacher, or a very famous person who lives up the road from you!
